Fishing licences

A Recreational Fishing Licence is required to fish Lake Eildon and its rivers. Here's the lay of the land.

Who needs one

Anyone fishing Victorian waters needs a Recreational Fishing Licence — except under-18s and holders of a Victorian Seniors Card, who are exempt from the fee but must still follow all fishing regulations. Carry proof while you fish.

Bag limits

Limits apply per species — five trout combined per day, one Murray cod (minimum 55 cm), five golden perch (minimum 30 cm). Redfin have no limit. Check current rules before you keep a fish.

Closed seasons

Murray cod close 1 September – 30 November. Some rivers have trout closures over winter, though Lake Eildon stays open for trout year-round.

Gear restrictions

Up to two rods per person, no more than two hooks or one lure per line. Live-bait restrictions apply and size limits cover most species.

Regulations can change. Always check the latest rules at vfa.vic.gov.au.
