Jamieson
Gold Rush Heritage
Jamieson is a historic gold rush village nestled in a picturesque valley where the Jamieson and Goulburn Rivers meet. The town retains much of its 1860s character, with original heritage buildings lining the main street and stories of prospectors past echoing through the surrounding hills. Gold was discovered here in 1860, triggering a rush that saw thousands of miners flood into the valley seeking their fortune. Today, visitors can try their own luck at licensed fossicking areas along the river, where small amounts of gold are still occasionally found. The crystal-clear Jamieson River provides popular swimming holes where families cool off during summer months, while fishermen cast for trout in the shaded pools. The township offers comfortable accommodation, a classic country pub, and a general store with essentials. The surrounding mountains provide access to challenging 4WD tracks including the famous Mount Terrible Road, while numerous bushwalking trails wind through the valley. The annual Jamieson Cup horse racing event brings the town alive with country spirit and community celebration.
