UGFM - an Official Emergency Radio Broadcaster in Victoria
On Friday afternoon (23/4/2010) the Victorian Minister for Police & Emergency Services Bob Cameron accompanied by the Commissioner for Emergency Services Bruce Esplin will visit the studios of community radio station UGFM at Alexandra.
A memorandum of understanding will be signed at about 2-30pm. Radio Murrindindi-UGFM will become the first community radio station in Australia to be officially designated as a Emergency Services Information broadcaster. They join ABC and some commercial stations. This follows a review by the Office of the Emergency Services Commissioner.
UGFM has been heavily involved in emergency broadcasting for 10 years within the Murrindindi Shire and is a member of the Shire Emergency Management Planning Committee.
The station performed a vital role during the fires that devastasted much of the Shire during February and March last year and during the major fires in the preceeding years. UGFM has presented evidence at the Bushfires Royal Commission. It also broadcast vital information during the floods and storms on the 1st Janauary, 2010. The signing of the MOU now makes UGFM an official state Emergency services broadcaster.
